How My Internship Changed My Career Path

It was Friday October 23rd and the four interns from Whitworth University working for Saint George’s School were frantically putting together the last details for the TEDxSpokane event scheduled the following day. We stopped for a minute to reflect on all of the work we had put into the event, and we were so excited knowing that 300 people would be participating and see all that we had contributed. As the lead intern for this event, I worked on creating signage, programs, flyers and nametags. I also had the opportunity to learn how to delegate and feel confident in my teammates to get the job done. We all worked together creating bags with everything the participants would need for the day. We helped with check-in in the morning allowing us to get some great experience with customer relations and dealing with any kinks along the way. Throughout the day I was also able to network with companies helping to pass out ice cream and talk to prospective employers during the breaks. At the end of the event, we helped with tear down, t-shirt sales and thanking the attendees for coming. I will never forget the experience I had working on this event and observing a few of the guest speakers as well. The event itself helped me to realize non-profit events and cause marketing are two career areas I am interested in. The idea of working on non-profit events where I can see a tangible outcome is key to my careers success. This internship was the most rewarding experience I have had in my college career. It helped me to decide on my career choice and taught me new skills in which I can use in my future. I would not exchange this experience for anything and I hope everyone is able to participate in an internship as great as mine.
